BOULDER CITY, Nev. – After a disappointing start to the final tournament of the fall season Monday, the Colorado State women’s golf team responded with a solid 289 (+1) on Tuesday at the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown at the Boulder Creek Golf Club.
The Rams shaved nine strokes off of their team score from Monday’s opening round, mostly around the greens, which helped CSU move up two spots in the team rankings where they are 14th heading into Wednesday’s final round.
“Putts just fell today,” said Head Coach Angie Hopkins. “Overall we were just much more confident today and that showed in our putting.”
Senior Stefanie Ferguson showed a lot of confidence on Tuesday, bouncing back from a 7-over performance in Round 1 to lead the Rams with a 3-under 69. Ferguson carded three birdies and played bogie-free to post a new career-low round, eclipsing her old mark by two strokes. She enters Round 3 tied for 53rd overall.
“Stefanie is a senior and she really stepped up for us today,” added Hopkins.
Junior Kasey Claussen continues to shine as the Rams top performer this season. The Fort Collins native paces the Rams in a tie for 18th overall (-1) after shooting a 70 in Round 2.
Freshmen Melissa Martin (+6) and Brianna Espinoza are tied for 63rr and 71st overall. Junior Natalie Stone is tied for 80th at 9-over.
The Rams remain in the hunt for fourth top-10 finish of the fall and resume play Wednesday morning, with an 8:00 a.m. PT shotgun start. Live scoring is available at www.GolfStat.com.
