LARAMIE, Wyo. – Colorado State’s indoor track and field team began its season on Saturday with a successful day at the Wyoming Power Meet, as the Rams posted five individual wins and numerous top-three finishes.

“This was a typical first meet,” Head Coach Brian Bedard said. “We saw a mixture of the good, the bad and the ugly today. I was pleasantly surprised with how well our freshmen competed today. As well, our female multi-event athletes also responded well and did a nice job.”

A number of competitors got the season off to a great start. Junior Doug Dieker won the men’s pole vault with a personal best vault of 16 feet even (4.88 meters), followed in second place by sophomore Ryan Pahlau. Senior Alex Godell set a personal best in the weight throw with a toss of 64-03.00 feet (19.58m) as he came in second place.

“Dieker was great today,” Bedard said. “Big Al also did a great job in the weight throw. It was a very good opener for him.”

In their first event for Colorado State, freshmen Ashley Dace, Jennifer Lehman, Jenna Sliwinski and Sophia Wagner impressed Bedard with their performances. Lehman finished as the top collegiate finisher in the long jump at 17-09.00 feet (5.41m) and in a tie for fourth place in the high jump, coming in at 5-03.00 feet (1.60m), Dace finished in fifth place in the long jump and Sliwinski finished in seventh place in the shot put.

“Those girls did a very nice job today,” Bedard said. “While some upperclassmen didn’t have their greatest performances, the young freshmen really came out and showed what they are capable of. I was impressed. We have to remember that we are a young team that will only get better throughout the season.”

Other event winners for the Rams included junior Kevin Wills in the high jump, senior Missy Faubus in the shot put, junior Tanesha Johnson in the triple jump and junior Sulaiman Sayyid in the 200 meter dash.

The Rams will now head to a six-week break before their next meet on January 24. The team will practice next week and then have a week off. There will be voluntary practices held throughout the Christmas break and Bedard is expecting those that go home to continue working out.
