FORT COLLINS, Colo. - Colorado State got plenty of help from the bench Wednesday night as sophomore Emily Neal led the Rams charge with 13 points while junior Amaka Uzomah and freshman Bonnie Barbee added ten points each. However, it was not enough as CSU (2-19, 0-8 MWC) lost to New Mexico (12-9, 4-4 MWC) 74-47 at Moby Arena.
"I just wanted to come out and compete and try to do what I could," Neal said. "My shots were falling and it helped our team."
New Mexico center Angela Hartill took the game on her shoulders from the beginning scoring six of New Mexico's first eight points to take an early 8-2 lead at the 17:18 mark. The Rams struggled to come back and went into the half down 16, 36-20.
The second half saw another Lobo step up for their team as senior Dionne Marsh scored 13 of her 23 points in the second half. Marsh led all players in points and rebounds, snatching seven off the glass.
Senior Sara Hunter had seven points, five of which came in the second half. Neal's 13 points is a season high for the versatile guard, who made a career-best four 3-pointers. Barbee tied her career best with 10 points in the contest and for the second straight home game Uzomah scored in double figures (12 points vs. Wyoming).
"Right now with nine new players, we're finding ourselves," Head Coach Jen Warden said. "It's great to see those players (Neal, Barbee and Uzomah) step up. We need players to step up like this on a consistent basis so we can build on it."
The Lobos shot 54.4 percent in the contest and out rebounded the Rams 34-28.
The Rams return to action on Saturday afternoon against the UNLV Lady Rebels. CSU will look to avenge a two-point setback to begin conference play earlier this season at the Cox Pavilion. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. in Moby Arena.
