Final Stats

FORT COLLINS, Colo. - Senior Sara Hunter netted 23 points, scoring 14 of those in the second half but it was not enough as the Colorado State women's basketball team (2-20, 0-9 MWC) lost in a close game to UNLV (7-15, 3-6 MWC), 76-68, at Moby Arena.

"Obviously we're a different team when Sara has a 20-plus point game," Head Coach Jen Warden said.  "This and Wyoming were our best games all year."

The second half saw both teams fighting back and forth as the lead switched hands five times.  UNLV took the lead 56-54 for the final time at the 7:14 mark after senior Sequoia Holmes scored a layup off a steal by junior Brittany Halberg.  However, Hunter kept the Rams in the game and after scoring another three-pointer with 1:26 remaining the Rams were within three points 65-68.

"We need a win, and we could have had it tonight," Hunter said.  "Our numbers show well, but we let it slip on defense."

Holmes managed to answer Hunter's 14 points in the second half by scoring 19 of her 22 points after halftime as well.  Holmes, the leading scorer in the Mountain West Conference, hit a crucial jumper to put UNLV in the lead by five, 65-70, with 51 seconds remaining and made a layup with eight seconds left to put UNLV up by eight and put the game out of reach for the Rams 68-76.

"She worked hard for her points tonight," Hunter said about Holmes.  "She shoots over everyone and is a good jumper."

The Rams had three other players besides Hunter to score in double figures.  Freshman Elle Queen had 12 points, 12 rebounds and dished out five assists.  It marked her second-career double-double and her five assists is a career best.  Junior Emily Neal added 11 points to reach double-figures scoring for the second consecutive game and freshman Lauren Young contributed 10 points, including a career-high tying two 3-pointers.  Junior Amaka Uzomah grabbed 11 rebounds marking the third game this season in which she has reached double figures in rebounding.

UNLV out shot CSU 50.9 percent to 38.1 percent, however CSU was 40.7 percent from beyond the arc while UNLV shot 33.3 percent.

Colorado State will travel to Provo, Utah and take on BYU Wednesday in their next matchup.  Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. MT at the Marriott Center.
