SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- The Colorado State softball team fell to 14-8 on Sunday, dropping two games at the Capital Classic softball tournament. The Rams opened the day dropping a 5-4 decision against No. 19/21 Ohio State, followed by an 18-3 loss to Cal Poly.
Senior Lauren Cusick led off the first inning against Ohio State with a solo home run to center field, but the Buckeyes responded with two runs in the bottom half of the inning and never relinquished the lead.
Cusick finished 2-for-3 from the plate in the first game with one run scored and added her second RBI after being hit by a pitch with bases loaded to score Sara Sullivan in the sixth inning.
Sophomore Allison Majam recorded three hits in the contest, and added a solo home run of her own with one out in the top of the third inning.
Sophomore pitcher Rebecca Penland picked up the loss for the Rams, allowing three earned runs on seven hits in 5.0 innings pitched, while walking four batters and striking out three.
In the Rams' tournament finale against Cal Poly, the Mustangs stormed out of the gates with 15 runs in the bottom or the first inning, putting the game out of reach from the very beginning.
The Rams used four pitchers in the game's first two innings. Junior Kim Klabough earned the start, giving up six earned runs on four hits, while recording just one Mustangs out. Senior hurler Cayte Billman entered in relief of Klabough and gave up four runs, three earned, on three hits while failing to record an out.
Penland entered the game and got the Rams out of the first inning, but not before Cal Poly had put 15 runs on the board. Penland left the game with two outs in the second inning and freshman Eranne Daugharthy pitched the final 2.1 innings of the game, giving up no Mustangs hits.
Once again, Cusick led the Rams' offense with a 1-for-3 performance from the plate with two runs scored. Freshman Caitlan Stem was the only Ram to record multiple hits in the game, going 2-for-3 with one RBI.
Sophomores Ashley Munoz and Kayla Kreutzman each finished 1-for-3 from the plate. Munoz added one RBI and Kreutzman scored one run.
Next up, the Rams head to the Bank of Hawaii Invitational in Honolulu. The Rams open the tournament against Cal and Hawaii on Wednesday. The Rams will also face Saint Mary's and Northwestern in the seven-game tournament.
