Final Stats

HONOLULU, Hawaii - Sophomore pitcher Rebecca Penland tossed a complete-game three-hitter and gave up just one run while striking out eight, as the Colorado State softball team (17-11) defeated Saint Mary's College, 6-1, in their final game of the Bank of Hawaii Invitational.

The Rams scored four runs in the first three innings to give Penland a comfortable lead early in the contest.  With two outs in the bottom of the first inning, sophomore Allison Majam doubled to right field and senior Julia Kloppe singled to center field to bring Majam home and give the Rams a 1-0 advantage.  The Rams posted a second run in the bottom of the second, again rallying with two outs.  Three consecutive singles by freshman Eranne Daugharthy, sophomore Robyn Mask and Lauren Cusick gave the Rams a two-run lead.

Penland knocked a two-run home run in the bottom of the third with Kloppe on first to push the Rams advantage to 4-0.

The Gaels got on the board in the sixth inning with an RBI single by Chelsea Loftis.  The Rams responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth, again with two outs.  Mask reached on an error by the shortstop and Cusick doubled to center field.  Then, with runners on second and third, freshman Caitlan Stem doubled down the left field line to give the Rams a 6-1 lead.

Penland retired the Gaels in order in the top of the seventh inning to seal the Rams' victory.

Next up, the Rams head to nearby Greeley, Colo., for a doubleheader with in-state rival Northern Colorado.  First pitch is scheduled for noon on Saturday.
