Rams track and field continues to excel

FORT COLLINS, Colo. - The Colorado State track and field teams posted another successful weekend at the CU Invitational and the Sun Angel Classic. The Rams had multiple qualifying marks through the weekend, may of them improvements on previous NCAA regional marks. Drew Morano broke the Colorado State record in the 400-meter dash with a time of 45.91, placing third in the overall invitational section of the race at the Sun Angel Classic.
The Rams success began early this week as Jason Schutz was the top collegiate finisher in the invitational section of the men's hammer and the top overall finisher in the men's discus at the Mesa Classic. Cameron Carter earned the third spot in the invitational discus.
Missy Faubus also found success, winning the invitational discus and shot put events. Jennifer Ugochukwu won the open shot put event and finished seventh in the open hammer throw. Megan Berg and Amanda Johnson finished fifth and sixth, respectively, in the invitational hammer throw.
On Saturday, CSU's throwers continued to lead the way. At the CU Invitational, Emily Geubelle set a personal best by almost 10 feet in the discus event with a throw of 147-00 feet. In the men's and women's triple jump events, Travis Smith and Sonni Russell both finished third in their respective events. Leah Elmshauser finished fourth in the women's hammer with a throw of 157-10. Ian Lettow placed third in the men's shot put and sixth in the discus. Tyson Williams placed fourth in the discus, the top Rams' finisher.
CSU's Michelle Roberts won the long jump competition with a leap of 17-3.5 while Kristen Kugler finished third. In the pole vault, Kate Colvin and Ryan Pahlau each finished in second. Sonni Russell was second in the women's high jump while Alex Lockhart earned the third spot in the men's event. On the track, Teresa Bell won the 400-meter dash with a time of 59.18. Learsha Jones was second in the 100 meters.
At the Sun Angel Classic, the highlight of the meet came as Morano finished third in the invitational 400-meter dash event, setting a school record. Schutz again shined throwing 188-1 in the discus to be the top collegiate finisher in the event. Nigel Josesph, who joined the Rams in January, ran a regional qualifying time of 52.2 in the 400-meter hurdles to finish seventh. Ryan Friese won one of the faster heats of the 800 meters.
Faubus threw a seasonal best in the shot put with a mark of 49-8 to win the event. Janay DeLoach continued to improve winning the long jump with a leap of 20-8. Tanesha Johnson also continued her impressive season with a jump of 40-4.75 in the triple jump, good for second place in the event. Stacey Poulos finished ninth in the hammer throw with a regional qualifying throw of 178-04.
CSU will host the second home meet of the season, the Ram Open, starting Saturday morning. The Rams will also send several athletes to the Mount Sac event beginning Wednesday.
