FORT COLLINS, Colo. - The Colorado State softball team defeated the Northern Colorado Bears Wednesday to complete the season sweep of the Rams in-state rival. Despite snowy conditions, Colorado State scored 11 runs on nine hits to defeat the Bears in five innings. The Rams are now 21-16 overall.
Sophomore Rebecca Penland finished 2-for-3 at the plate with three RBI to lead the Rams. Penland doubled in the bottom of the first inning, driving in senior Lauren Cusick and freshman Caitlan Stem, to give CSU a 2-0 advantage.
Stem scored her second run of the game in the bottom of the second inning when sophomore Allison Majam homered for the sixth time this season to give the Rams a 5-1 lead. Stem also recorded her first RBI of the game earlier in that inning on her double up the middle that plated sophomore Robyn Mask who led off the inning with a walk.
After giving up two runs in the top half of the third inning, the Rams scored three runs on four hits to take an 8-3 lead. Penland led off the inning with a home run to left center and freshman Eranne Daugharthy followed with her first career home run. Sophomore Kayla Kreutzman singled to right center and scored on a double by Mask.
Colorado State added three more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning on four Northern Colorado errors to complete the run-rule.
Junior pitcher Kim Klabough (7-8) picked up the complete-game victory for the Rams. She allowed just four hits and struck out six batters in the game, while giving up no earned runs.
The Rams continue their home stand Friday with a doubleheader against conference foe UNLV live on The Mtn. The games will be the first live televised contests ever played at Ram Field. First pitch is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
