BROOMFIELD, Colo. - Junior Kasey Claussen opened play at the Heather Farr/CU Memorial Invitational with a career-low round of 68 (-4), just one stroke shy of the school record, as the Rams closed out the first day in fifth place at the Omni Interlocken Resort.
Claussen carded birdies on the 16th, 17th and 18th holes to finish her first round and move to four-under par. The Fort Collins native, then fired a second round of 74 and closed the day in a tie for ninth with a two-round total of 142 (-2).
Junior Natalie Stone turned in a very consistent round, hitting 17 of 18 greens and 13 of 14 fairways according to Rams Head Coach Angie Hopkins. She enters tomorrow's final round in a tie for 23rd at 3-over-par.
"Natalie and Kasey both hit the ball very well today and came up big for us," said Hopkins. "Kasey birdied three consecutive holes in the first round and Natalie eagled the 13th hole.
Sophomore Cecilia Edlund is tied for 29th at 5-over, while Melissa Martin (+8) and Stefanie Ferguson (+11) are tied for 47th and 65th, respectively. Martin, a true freshman, shot rounds of 73 and 78. Ferguson, a senior playing in her hometown, started off slow with an opening-round 83, but she rebounded with an even-par 72 in the second round.
"Stef was a little rusty to start, but found her rhythm." added Hopkins. "I thought she really played tough today."
The Rams are alone in fifth-place heading into the final round of action beginning with a shotgun start tomorrow at 8:30 a.m. The 45th-ranked Rams (+8) come into the last day within striking distance of Texas Tech (+6), Long Beach State (+5) and host Colorado (+1). Notre Dame sits atop the team leaderboard at five-under-par.
"We definitely left some shots out there and we would like to move up," added Hopkins. "Nothing is out the picture with this group."
Freshman Brianna Espinoza, competing as an individual, turned in rounds of 74 and 75 and is tied for 29th overall.
