BOULDER CITY, Nev. – After a good day of golf Monday, the Colorado State women’s golf team fell three spots to ninth place Tuesday during the second round of the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown.
CSU shot a team score of 310 (+22) on Tuesday, 22-over its Round 1 score. The Rams have a score of 598 (+22) going into Round 3 on Wednesday. No. 17 Arizona sits in first place with a score of 578 (+2). No. 23 Washington is in second (579) and No. 36 UC Davis is in third (582).
“The weather forecast was as expected,” Head Coach Angie Hopkins commented. “We had 30 mile-per-hour winds most of the day so that made a big difference in the scoring for the whole field. Unfortunately we had a few bad shots and those really cost us. We are going to have to make a few changes for tomorrow.”
Sophomore Melissa Martin shot a 75 (+3) on Tuesday allowing her to move down seven places to tie for 15th. Martin has a score of 147 (+3) heading into the third and final round. Senior Natalie Stone led the Rams during Round 2 with her score of 74 (+2), the same as Round 1, giving her a score of 148 (+4) going into Round 3. Stone is currently tied for 22nd.
“Melissa and Natalie really handled the weather and the conditions very well,” added Hopkins. “Natalie led the team today. She bogeyed the first hole and then finished at two over. I am really proud of her for sticking with it.”
Senior Kasey Claussen shot an 83 (+11) during the second round. Because of a low score during the first round, Claussen is currently 7-over. She is tied for 40th. Sophomore Brianna Espinoza shot an 81 (+9) giving her a score of 155 (+11). Espinoza is tied for 66th.
Freshman Emily Roering shot an 80 (+8) during Round 2. After being disqualified the first round for accidentally submitting the wrong score card, her score will count toward the team score, but she can no longer compete as an individual.
The Rams will begin the final round of the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown with a shotgun start Wednesday at 9 a.m. MDT. Live scoring will be available at www.golfstat.com.
