FORT COLLINS, Colo. – The Colorado State women’s basketball team opened its exhibition season Thursday night with a victory over CSU-Pueblo, 81-59, at Moby Arena.
After a close first half, in which both teams had trouble with turnovers, the Rams went into the break with a three-point lead. Although the Rams didn’t shoot the ball particularly well, they made up for it on the glass as they out-rebounded the ThunderWolves 32-14 in the first half.
Sophomore Kim Mestdagh took control of the game in the second half and led the Rams to the win. Mestdagh scored 23 of her 25 points in the second half, including seven three-pointers.
“I’ll tell you, I know Kim has the ability to shoot like that every game,” Head Coach Kristen Holt said. “I was very happy with her performance.”
The Rams had three players score in double figures: Mestdagh (25), Meghan Heimstra (18) and Meixandra Porter (14).
Mestdagh and Heimstra each recorded a double-double with Mestdagh grabbing 11 rebounds and Heimstra pulling down 10. Chatilla van Grinsven led the Rams in rebounding with 13.
“We did good,” Heimstra said. “We were hustling in and going for every ball.”
Katrina Selsor led the ThunderWolves in scoring with 13 points and grabbed five rebounds in a losing effort.
The Colorado State women’s basketball team will play its final exhibition game of the season next Friday, Nov. 6, against Adams State in Fort Collins. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. MT in Moby Arena.
