VALPARAISO, Ind. – The Colorado State women’s basketball team had three players score in double digits, but it wasn’t enough to overcome a quick Valparaiso team on Sunday afternoon at the school’s Athletics-Recreation Center. The Rams lost 68-58.
The Rams and Crusaders were very equally matched in the first half. CSU led by as much as four points and never trailed by more than one through the first 20 minutes of play.
The Rams continued their run with a quick start in the second half and had a nine-point lead with 12 minutes to go in the game, but they were unable to keep it as the Crusaders came back with a 9-0 run.
“We had three or four turnovers when we had that lead,” said Head Coach Kristen Holt. “We’re just out of sync. We aren’t doing the things we do in practice every day. We have to do the same things in the game.”
Sophomore Meghan Heimstra got her second double-double of the season with 12 points and 12 rebounds, and two more players scored in double figures. Sophomore Kim Mestdagh netted 20 points, while junior Bonnie Barbee had 15.
Valpo’s Lauren Kenney was one of two players for the Crusaders with a double-double on the night.
“She dominated us today with 19 points and 11 rebounds,” said Holt. “We need to box people out a little better, so that doesn’t happen. We are still making young mistakes. We’re relying on people with little experience to get a lot done.”
Turnovers were a large factor in the Rams’ loss. CSU turned the ball over 27 times, compared to Valpo’s 11.
CSU will come back home to host the Coors Rocky Mountain Invitational on Friday and Saturday. The Rams will play Texas State on Friday at 7 p.m. MT and then they will play again at 7 p.m. vs. either Houston or Delaware on Saturday.
