BERKELEY, Calif. – Despite 15 turnovers in the first half and foul trouble early in the game for sophomore Meghan Heimstra, the Rams found another road win in the consolation game of the Colliers International Classic. CSU defeated the Southern Illinois Salukis, 62-53, Sunday afternoon.
Sophomore Kim Mestdagh put up a career-high 30 points in the contest, as well as nine boards, three steals and two blocks. Natalie van den Adel also scored a career-high 14 points and Chatilla van Grinsven tied her career high in rebounds with 10 on the day.
Even with the slow start for the Rams, the Salukis were unable to capitalize. They committed 23 fouls in the game with six in the first 7 minutes of play.
“They were fouling a lot,” said Head Coach Kristen Holt. “That was good and (our) kids didn’t back down.”
Mestdagh jump-started the Rams offense in the second half with a quick jumper. After a layup from SIU’s Stephany Neptune, who had 14 points, the Rams built their lead to as high as 15 and never trailed through the last 20 minutes. They only registered six turnovers after halftime.
“At halftime I really got on them about the 15 turnovers,” commented Holt. “We were able to correct that in the second half.”
Next, the Rams look forward to a home game vs. in-state rival Colorado (5-1) on Friday.
“I’m hoping we’ll play like we did against Delaware at home,” said Holt. “If we do, it’ll be an exciting game.”
