BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - The CSU Rams women's water polo team defeated Fresno Pacific for the second time this season and lost a tough game against No. 7-ranked UC Davis to go 1-1 on the first day of the Roadrunner Invitational at the Hillman Aquatics Center Saturday.
Kallie Berry had a hat trick and Sarah Ostling and Emily Chambers each added two goals in an 11-3 rout of Fresno Pacific.
In their second game of the day, the Rams (4-7, 2-0 Western Water Polo Association) faced off against seventh-ranked UC Davis, and the Aggies showed why they are a national power in an 18-8 win over the Rams.
At the end of the first half, the Rams were holding tight with only a three-goal deficit. But UC Davis exploded in the third quarter for eight goals, which put the game out of reach.
"We came out and played well in the first half," coach Mike Moody said. "That third period just got away from us."
Orsi Nadasdy and Ali Pavlik each had three goals for the Rams and Berry added two more in the loss. Berry, a freshman, was particularly impressive all day Saturday.
"She's doing really well," Moody said. "She's getting comfortable at the college level."
The Rams continue action Sunday, with matchups against two conference opponents, Cal State Monterey Bay at 9 a.m. MST and Cal State East Bay at 12 p.m. MST.
