Rams indoor track opens Mountain West championships

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- The Mountain West Conference indoor track championships kicked off on Thursday at the Air Force Academy, and freshman Sophia Wagner earned the first point of the meet for the Colorado State indoor track team with an eighth-place finish in the women’s heptathlon.

“Sophia set personal records in the hurdle, long jump and overall score,” said CSU multi-event coach Tim Cawley. “She performed well and scored a point. Quite a few of the other girls also ended up setting personal bests.”

Wagner finished with 3,253 points, just ahead of two teammates Ashley Dace (3,208) took ninth and Jennifer Lehman (3,202) took 10th.Each athlete’s final score topped the Rams’ season high coming into the championships.

The women were very successful in the shot put portion of the heptathlon, having four of the top seven scores. Freshman Jenna Sliwinski won the event and junior Kristen Kugler took second for the Rams. Lehman finished in a tie for second in the high jump portion.

On the men’s side Doug Dieker sits in seventh position after completing four of the six events in the pentathlon. His strongest event  was the high jump, where he finished in a tie for fourth.

The meet will continue Friday morning with the final events in the pentathlon and Real-time results are available from themwc.com.
