WACO, Texas – The Colorado State women’s golf team notched its fifth top-10 finish of the season on Tuesday at the Baylor Spring Invite, thanks to a strong third-round effort from senior Stefanie Ferguson.
Ferguson fired a 71 (-1) in her final round at the Twin Rivers Golf Club, to help the Rams, who were in 10th place through two rounds, finish in eighth, their top finish since a seventh-place outing at the Price’s “Give ‘Em Five” Invite in October.
Ferguson’s final round of 71 gave her a 56-hole total of 228 (+12) and helped the Broomfield, Colo., native jump from a tie for 27th into a tie for fourth place, her best finish since the 2007 Heather Farr/CU Memorial (third).
“Stefanie played very well on a course that was set up to be very difficult,” said Head Coach Angie Hopkins. “She definitley used her four years of experience and played incredibly smart golf today. This was a course that you had to play a few times to learn where to go. Course management was extremely important.”
Also posting a strong finish for CSU was freshman Melissa Martin, the Rams’ co-leader entering the final round. Martin, who was even with classmate Brianna Espinoza in a tie for 19th through two rounds, posted a 5-over 77 and jumped five places in the individual standings to close the tournament in a tie for 14th, matching her top finish of the season which she recorded at the Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Invite in September. Espinoza carded an 81, to finish four strokes off of Martin’s pace in 30th place, her top finish of the season.
Sophomore Cecilia Edlund finished in a tie for 72nd overall with a three-round total of 258 (+42), and junior Kasey Claussen, the Rams’ leader in stroke average, was forced to withdraw during the final round after suffering an arm injury during yesterday’s second round.
Natalie Stone, competing as an individual, also posted a strong outing. The junior closed the tournament as the top individual finisher and placed tied for 23rd with a three-round total of 235 (+19).
Illinois State captured the team title, finishing with a three-round team total of 927 (+63), followed by New Mexico State in second place (+67), and host Baylor and Missouri State tying for third place with a team total of 933. Iowa State rounded out the top five, finishing 11 strokes behind Illinois State.
Southern Methodist’s Kate Ackerson took home medalist honors with a 223 (+7), just five strokes ahead of Ferguson.
Next up, Colorado State returns to action March 24-25 at the BYU Dixie Classic in St. George, Utah. The Rams will look to duplicate their efforts from last season’s tournament, in which CSU posted its top finish of the year.
