AMES, Iowa – In the hopes of improving their chances at an NCAA championship meet berth, three Colorado State track and field athletes participated in Saturday’s “Last Chance” meet at Iowa State University.
Middle distance runner Ryan Friese, fresh off his win in the 800-meter run at the Mountain West conference meet, was trying to improve upon his provisional qualifying time of 1:49.90 he set at Air Force last weekend. The junior however ran 1:50.75 in Ames to finish 9th in the event.
Senior throwers Missy Faubus and Alex Godell, who both provisionally qualified earlier in the season, competed in the shot put and weight throw, respectively. Faubus set a seasonal best with a throw of 15.49 meters which was good for second place in the event. It was a slight improvement over her mark of 15.44 meters that she set earlier this season. Godell, who entered Saturday’s meet with a provisional mark of 20.65 meters, threw 19.77 meters in Ames and finished seventh in the event.
“Our three athletes competed pretty well on Saturday,” said CSU Head Coach Brian Bedard. “The problem with the “last chance” meets is that you have to do extremely well for them to be productive and so you can move up in the rankings. Both Ryan and Missy are down too far in the rankings to qualify, but right now Alex has the 14th best mark in the country so we feel he will compete for us at the NCAA meet. We’ve had some kids in the past qualify for nationals at “last chance” meets, but it’s pretty rare.”
