CSU women's golf opens MWC championships

SEASIDE, Calif. – The Colorado State women’s golf team opened play at the Mountain West Conference championships at the par-72, 6,027-yard Black Horse Golf Course on Thursday.
Brianna Espinoza started strong for the Rams in the first round. The freshman from Phoenix, Ariz., carded an opening round total of 1-over 73, including five birdies, to pace the Rams in a tie for third place overall, just three strokes behind Day 1 leader Jonelle Martinez of Wyoming.
Senior Stefanie Ferguson also posted a top-20 finish through 18 holes for the Rams. Ferguson notched a 7-over 79 and three-way tie for 20th overall. Junior Kasey Claussen, the Rams’ season leader in stroke average, sits just one stroke off of Ferguson’s pace in a tie for 23rd.
Freshman Melissa Martin and junior Natalie Stone tied for 31st, after shooting rounds of 10-over 82.
As a team, Colorado State enters Round 2 in last place, but just nine strokes separate the second and seventh place. New Mexico leads the pack after shooting a team score of 13-over 301. TCU and BYU are tied for second at 17-over, while UNLV fired a team score of +18. Wyoming (+21) and San Diego State (+24) sit just ahead of CSU (+26).
