ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The Colorado State women’s golf team got off to a slow start due to a tough and wet course at the Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Memorial on Saturday. They are currently in 15th place after the first 36 holes.
Head Coach Angie Hopkins was proud of the team for playing their best.
“This golf course has a lot of rough,” she said. “It was pretty wet because it rained a lot last week. The course played tough. Natalie held together very well. Kasey is sick and came back with a 73 which was big for us. They played hard. It just didn’t go our way, but tomorrow is a new day.”
The Rams scored a 304 during both rounds today, leaving them with a score of 608 (+24) going into the final round. Pepperdine is in first place with a score of 575 (-9) while home-team New Mexico is in second with a score of 580 (-4). Conference foe TCU is in third place with a score of 582 (-2).
Senior Natalie Stone, who is tied for 18th place, is currently leading the way for the rams. Stone scored a low 71 during the first round and a 76 during the second round, giving her a score of 147 (+1) after the first 36 holes. Senior Kasey Claussen scored a 77 through the first 18 holes but rebounded with a 73 for the second round. Her score of 150 (+4) places her tied for 33.
Sophomore Melissa Martin scored a 78 during the first round but lowered her second round score to a 75 putting her in a tie for 56th. Sophomore Brianna Espinoza is tied for 86th and freshman Emily Roering is tied for 88th.
Freshman Cecilie Krefting, who is competing as an individual, is tied for 72nd with a score of 156 (+10).
The Rams will resume play Sunday with a shotgun start at 7 a.m. MDT. Live scoring will be available at www.GolfStat.com.
