FORT COLLINS, Colo. – Colorado State put forth a great second half but was unable to overcome a TCU team that scored 46 first-half points. The Rams fell 73-61 Saturday afternoon at Moby Arena.
TCU (21-6, 11-3 Mountain West) showed why it is the No. 1 team in the MWC Saturday, putting on a shooting display in the first half. The Horned Frogs shot 50 percent from the field, including six three-pointers, en route to 46 first-half points.
“I definitely thought we allowed them to do whatever they wanted,” Head Coach Kristen Holt said. “They made their shots. They finished.”
Despite a 20-point first half deficit, the Rams came out of the locker room ready for a comeback. The scrappy second-half Rams were led by sophomore Chatilla van Grinsven’s 15 second-half points. Van Grinsven also came close to a career record in blocks, rejecting four TCU shots.
The Rams (13-14, 5-9 MWC) outscored TCU 35-27 in the second half but it wasn’t enough as TCU rolled to a victory. TCU was able to hold Colorado State’s top scorer, sophomore Kim Mestdagh, to only nine points. Mestdagh leads the MWC with 24 double-figure scoring games and coming into the game led the MWC with 11 straight games scoring in double figures. It was only the third time this season Mestdagh was held under 10 points.
The Rams were also without junior Zoi Simmons, who averages 28.5 minutes per game. Simmons came into the game with 1:06 left in the first half and didn’t appear for the rest of the game due to a coach’s decision to rest her ailing knee.
Sophomore Meghan Heimstra had 14 points and was one rebound shy of a double-double. Junior Bonnie Barbee added 10 points, connecting on two three-pointers.
With the loss to TCU, the Rams fall below .500 for the first time this season. Colorado State won’t have to wait long for an opportunity to get back to .500 when it takes on San Diego State at home on Wednesday. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.
“We’ve seen if we play aggressive we are so much better,” van Grinsven said, “especially when we play as one team.”
