SEASIDE, Calif. - The Colorado State women's golf team placed third in the Mountain West Conference championship Saturday. This marks the Rams highest finish at the MWC championship since 2006.
After posting a team score of 306 (+18) for the first round and a 302 (+14) for the second, the Rams shot a 306 (+18) for the final 18 holes. The team finished the tournament with a total score of 914 (+50).
"UNM and TCU are tough," commented Head Coach Angie Hopkins. "We really held together and I'm proud of them for holding third. That is pretty good with all of these teams. It was tough conditions and at the end, they just held on."
New Mexico placed first with a score of 898 (+34) and TCU claimed second with a score of 907 (+43). Jodi Ewart of New Mexico won the tournament for the third time with her score of 217 (+1).
Seniors Kasey Claussen and Natalie Stone were the top finishers for Colorado State. Claussen and Stone tied for sixth place with scores of 228 (+12). Claussen shot a 77 (+5) for Round 1, a 74 (+2) for Round 2 and a 77 (+5) for Round 3. Stone shot a 76 (+4) for Round 1, a 74 (+2) for Round 2 and a 78 (+6) for Round 3.
Along with her top-10 finish, Claussen earned a spot on the 2009-2010 All-Mountain West Conference Team.
"Kasey hit all 14 fairways and only eight greens," commented Hopkins. "That tells you how difficult it was to keep the ball on the green. Besides Melissa, everyone hit between seven and nine greens today. That's not typical."
Ram sophomore Melissa Martin continued to improve her score with each new round allowing her to finish tied for 12th. She shot an 81 (+9) the first round, a 76 (+4) the second round and a low 74 (+2) the final round. Martin's final score was 231 (+15).
"Melissa really came through for us today," stated Hopkins. "She had a double bogey, and then went birdie, birdie there at the end."
Sophomore Brianna Espinoza finished tied for 16th with a score of 234 (+18). Espinoza shot a score of 77 (+5) for the final round. Freshman Emily Roering finished tied for 19th with a total of 235 (+19). She posted a score of 81 (+8) for Round 3.
"I think a top-three finish will help our cards for a bid to regionals," added Hopkins.
