FORT COLLINS, Colo. – Sophomore Christine Thomsen started Colorado State’s rally in the fifth inning with her two-run home run and senior Allison Majam added a solo shot in the same frame en route to a 6-5 come-from-behind victory against in-state rival Northern Colorado at Ram Field on Tuesday.
The Bears owned a 5-0 lead before the Rams scored six unanswered to grab their 22nd victory of the season and remain perfect at home.
“I was really proud of how our kids fought back and battled today,” Head Coach Mary Yori said. “This is good momentum for us heading into conference play this weekend.”
Jessica McNabb recorded a one-out single in the top of the second inning and scored Northern Colorado’s first run when teammate Alex Neely doubled to left center.
The Bears (8-23) added to that lead in the following frame after Melisa Ryba launched a solo shot to left field and extended their lead in the fifth when Ryba hit her second home run in as many at bats to grab a 4-0 advantage.
Thomsen cut Northern Colorado’s lead to 5-2 in the bottom half of the fifth when she hit her third home run of the season to left field to plate sophomore Jenna Krogh. Majam gave the Rams their third run of the game with her solo shot to left center.
Senior Robyn Mask cut the Bears lead to one after she led off the inning with a single through the left side and scored when senior Sarah Sullivan knocked a pinch-hit double to left center. Sullivan scored the tying run when junior Caitlan Stem singled through the left side and Stem scoring the go-ahead run when Thomsen reached first on an error by UNC’s McNabb at second base.
Senior Rebecca Penland (2-0) allowed one hit in the top of the seventh, but shut down Northern Colorado’s offense to grab her second victory. She tossed 2.1 innings after relieving sophomore Kelli Eubanks in the fifth. Eubanks started in the circle for the Rams and threw 4.2 innings, allowing five runs on nine hits while striking out six.
Colorado State (22-11) begins conference play Friday in Las Vegas, Nev. First pitch is set for 7 p.m. MT against UNLV. The Rams head to San Diego, Calif., Saturday and Sunday to face San Diego State at 7 p.m. MT and 2 p.m. MT, respectively. Sunday’s contest will be broadcast live on CBS College Sports.
