Softball recap: Rebels rally to beat Rams

LAS VEGAS, Nev. – After trailing 2-0 to UNLV on Friday, Colorado State used a four-run sixth inning to grab the lead, but the Rebels rallied in the bottom half of the inning to defeat the Rams 7-4 at Eller Media Stadium.
Colorado State is now 22-12 overall this season and 0-1 in MWC action.
Marissa Nichols got UNLV on the board in the bottom of the first inning when she homered to center field to give the Rebels a 1-0 lead. Tara Bendt followed Nichols with a double and scored UNLV’s second run of the inning when teammate Kendall Fearn recorded a sacrifice fly to center field.
The game remained 2-0 until the top of the sixth inning when Colorado State tallied four runs on five hits to grab a 4-2 advantage. Junior Caitlan Stem gave the Rams their first run of the game when she recorded a sacrifice fly to left field to plate junior Ivory Allen. Allen entered the game to pinch run for Sarah Sullivan, who led off the inning with a double to center field.
Sophomore Christine Thomsen tied the game at 2-2 when she singled through the right side to plate freshman Brianna Donahue. Senior Rebecca Penland gave Colorado State a two-run advantage when she knocked a single up the middle to plate sophomore Jenna Krogh and Thomsen.
UNLV regained the lead in the bottom half of the inning after Ashli Holland belted a grand slam to left field to give the Rebels a 6-4 advantage. Alyssia De La Torre followed Holland with a solo shot to left to add a seventh run for UNLV and give the Rebels a 7-4 advantage heading into the final frame.
UNLV pitcher Jessica O’Connor recorded the final three outs in the game to secure the Rebels’ 7-4 victory.
Sophomore Kelli Eubanks started in the circle for Colorado State, tossing five innings before being relieved by Penland for the final frame.
The Rams continue their conference road trip when they travel to San Diego, Calif., Saturday and Sunday to face San Diego State at 7 p.m. MT and 2 p.m. MT, respectively. Sunday’s contest will be broadcast live on CBS College Sports.
