BOULDER CITY, NEV.- The Colorado State women’s golf team hung tough on the first day of the 17-team Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown at Boulder Creek Golf Club. The team is currently in 11th place after shooting a 295 (+7).
Leading the tournament with a 277 (-11) is the highest ranked team in the field No. 24 UC Davis. Behind UC Davis are San Diego State (280), Pepperdine (281), UC Irvine (286) and Idaho (286).
Betsy Kelly had a great round and carded a three-under 69 on the day. Kelly is currently tied for sixth and in position to challenge for the championship. She was aided by great play around the green.
“Betsy hit 13 greens but was 100% for up and downs,” said Head Coach Angie Collier.
Brianna Espinoza is also in good shape, finishing the day tied for 17th at one under.
The Rams’ Sarah Roering posted a 77 (+5), Jessa LaBarbera shot a 78 (+6) and Emily Roering fought through injury and finished with an 80 (+8). The team will look to improve on today’s scores in Round 2.
“If we get a few more putts to fall as a team we can really take it low tomorrow,” noted Collier.
The individual leaders are Grace Na of Pepperdine (-9) and Christine Wong of SDSU (-5). Na and Wong are followed by Kayla Mortellaro (Idaho), Bev Vantananugulkit (UC Davis) and Amy Simanton (UC Davis) who are all tied at -4.
Tomorrow’s action begins at 8:30 a.m. MDT.
