LINCOLN, Neb. -  After playing for the second straight day and forcing four matches to three sets, the CSU women's tennis team concluded its weekend play Sunday afternoon with a 5-2 win over Creighton at the Nebraska Tennis Center.

Despite scratching two players on its roster due to illnesses, CSU was able to persevere through close matches in order to reign over Creighton. In four out of the six singles matches, the Rams lost the first sets. In three out of those four, Colorado State was able to come back and win the match.

The team's win over the Bluejays (5-3, 0-1 MVC) allowed the Rams to improve their overall record to 3-4 (0-0 MWC), which also evened out their weekend record, 1-1, after losing Saturday to No. 26 Nebraska.

"Today's match was a totally different kind of match," said Head Coach Jon Messick.  "Doubles came in and jumped on Creighton early allowing the team to get an early lead."

Colorado State quickly set the pace for the dual as the Rams notched wins at Nos. 1, 2 and 3 doubles. Caitlin Fluegge and Tori Arneson defeated their opponents, 8-4. Following their lead, Lauren Mulhern and Kaley Schultz secured an 8-3 win at No. 2 doubles. Wrapping up doubles play, Melissa Hozinger and Veronika Wojakowska seized the third win for the Rams, 8-5.

In true captain fashion, Fluegge continued the Rams winning streak as she quickly defeated her Creighton opponent in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3.

"Fluegge was the first off the court for singles play," said Messick. "A solid win at No. 1 is always good to lead the team and set the pace for the dual."

The Jays halted CSU's streak at 2-0 as Kaitlin Wooldridge at No. 6 fell to Sara Cadwallader. Cadwallader claimed the first set, 6-3, but fell in the second set, 6-4, as Wooldridge picked up her play. Unfortunately, Wooldridge lost her momentum in the third set, 6-0, allowing Cadwallader to claim the Jays' first point in the dual.

"Singles was tough," said Messick. "Creighton played well on every court. I was impressed on how hard the team fought when they were down in order to come back and turn it around."

Despite the close 2-1 dual score, the Rams remained confident as they seized three consecutive wins at Nos. 2, 4 and 5 singles.

Wojakowska was the first of the three to conclude play. After falling, 5-7, in a close first set, Wojakowska maintained a competitive edge securing wins in her second and third sets, 6-4, 6-3. Freshman Lauren Pick was next to notch a point, topping her Creighton opponent 6-7, 6-1, 6-4. Pick's match clinched the Rams' win over the Jays. Claiming CSU's final singles win for the day was No. 2 Arneson after pushing through a 6-3, 5-7, 6-4, match.

The Bluejays claimed their second and final point in the dual at No. 3 as Mulhern submitted a close 7-6, 3-6, 6-4 loss, finalizing the dual score, 5-2.

Colorado State will return to the courts for its next home match, Kid's Day, held Saturday against Montana State, at 6 p.m. MST. The match will be offered free to the public and will take place indoors at Miramont Lifestyle Fitness, 901 Oakridge Dr. in south Fort Collins behind Sam's Club.
