Tennis recap: Rams lose to Columbia

LONG BEACH, Calif. - The CSU women's tennis team sustained a 7-0 loss Tuesday against new competition in California against Columbia.
Colorado State (4-5, 0-0 Mountain West) carried defeat in the team's first of three spring break matches this week in California. Columbia improved to 8-4 (0-0 Ivy League).
"Overall the team could not step it up enough to make up for missing players in the lineup," said Head Coach Jon Messick. "We simply had chances that we didn't take advantage of."
In doubles, the Rams managed to notch a win at No. 3 doubles but then went on to sustain six more consecutive losses.
Despite losing the doubles point, the Rams were determined to put on a fight as they battled through the singles matches.
Several of the players in Colorado State's lineup persevered through illness and fought through each match regardless.
At No. 1 singles, Caitlin Fluegge battled herself due to illness, but put up a good fight, before eventually falling to her Columbia opponent.
CSU saw promise at Nos. 2 and 5 singles as the Rams forced their matches to a third set but unfortunately fell short as the Lions again defeated CSU, finalizing Colorado State's loss for the day.
CSU will return to the courts after three days of practice to match up in Fullerton, Calif., facing Cal State Fullerton. Matches will begin at 1 p.m. MDT. The Rams' next home match is expected to be hosted at Colorado State's new outdoor tennis facility on March 25 against Weber State.
