Women's golf recap: Rams tied for fifth

Phoenix, Ariz. – The Colorado State women’s golf team completed Round 2 of the MWC championship at the Wigwam Golf Course on Friday.
Head Coach Angie Hopkins was proud of her team performance.
“Today was a real team effort for these girls,” commented Hopkins. “The two freshmen played strong and their shortgames really paid off today.”
CSU Freshman Betsy Kelly led the Rams on Friday, scoring a total of 72 (E) in Round 2 and 71 (-1), finishing Day 2 with an overall total of 143 (-1), placing her tied for fourth. Junior Brianna Espinoza came in second for the Rams scoring a total of 74 (+2) in Round 2, finishing Day 2 with an overall total of 148 (+4) placing her tied for 12th. Freshman Sarah Roering scored a low-round score of 74 (+2) in Round 2, finishing with an overall total of 154 (+10).
“Betsy was 7/7 on up and downs and Sarah was 5/7,” added Hopkins.  “Brianna played very steady as usual and couldn’t get the putter going.”
The Rams scored a total of 297 (+9) in Round 2 and 300 (+12) scoring a combined team total of 597 (+21) placing them tied for fifth. In first place was UNLV scoring a total of 292 (+4) in Round 2 and scoring an overall team total of 578 (+2).  In second place was TCU with an overall team total of 581 (+5), followed by BYU with an overall team total of 586 (+10). Tied for first place was UNLV’s Therese Koelbaek, and Elis Keenan. Both girls scored overall totals of 141 (-3).
“We have improved every day,” said Hopkins. “I know tomorrow will be even better.”
The Rams will resume play Saturday with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. MDT. Live scoring will be available on GolfStat.com.
