FORT COLLINS, Colo. - Junior women's golfer Brianna Espinoza was selected to participate in the NCAA West regional, May 5-7 at the Washington National Golf Club in Auburn, Wash., the NCAA announced Monday.
If Espinoza can finish in the top two of the six individuals in the West Regional, she will qualify for the NCAA Championships May 18-21 in Bryan, Texas. Espinoza impressed the selection committee with an average round score of 74 (ranking fourth in the Mountain West) and by posting four top-eight finishes, with a best finish of third at the MountainView Invitational in Tuscon, Ariz. Espinoza shot a career-best three-round score of 214 in that tournament, including a season-low 70 in the final round.
"I am so excited and proud of Brianna," Head Coach Angie Hopkins said. "She leads by example and has put in the time and effort it takes to be nationally recognized. She has been a pleasure to coach and I credit her with this accomplishment."
The regionals are considered a preliminary tournament to decide the championship field. All told, 126 of the 378 players in the three regionals will qualify for the championships.
The Washington National Golf Club has been ranked among the "101 Best Golf Experiences in the West" by Fairways and Greens. The course is a par 72 with 6,266 total yardage.
