Women's basketball recap: Rams hold off UNC
Makeever leads team in points

FORT COLLINS, Colo. - A strong defense helped Colorado State hold off in-state foe UNC, 56-43, Tuesday night at Moby Arena. The Rams are now 1-1 this season.
"It was a tough determined game on the defensive end," said Head Coach Ryun Williams. "I think that's where it started for us tonight. Our kids were determined to not let them score so I'm proud of the effort and the contribution from everybody. It was a total team effort. I thought the bench was outstanding tonight and they really picked us up when we needed to be picked up. It was a great win."
Sophomore Amber Makeever came off the bench for the first time this season and led the Rams with a career high 15 points, hitting four of five from beyond the arc. Tonight was a break out game for Makeever, as she spent the previous season on the bench with a hip injury.
"It feels good," Makeever stated. "It's a long time coming and it felt good. I'm glad I can contribute to the team too by being that bench player and making threes."
CSU played a tough defensive game, causing the Bears to tally six turnovers during the first half and 10 in a physical second half of the game.
"In practice we focus on rebounding and getting out and going," Junior Alicia Nichols commented. "Defense provides your offense and that's what we need to focus on."
Nichols continued her impressive showing from the last game, recording a career high 11 points for the Rams, as well as adding four rebounds, two steals, and a block.
Senior Meghan Heimstra recorded 11 points, eight rebounds, and two blocks on the night. Heimstra is now just four blocks shy of becoming the fourth player in CSU history to reach the century mark.
Sophomore LaDeyah Forte played the entire game, only turning the ball over twice throughout the contest. Forte also tallied nine assists, tying her Mountain West high and nearly matching her career high of 10. She also added eight points to the scoreboard, three rebounds, and three steals.
Although junior Sam Martin struggled to add points to the board during the first half of the game. She had six rebounds, four points, three assists, three blocks, and a steal helping the Rams clinch the victory. Sophomore Kara Spotton added three points to the Rams scoreboard as well as tallying six rebounds and two steals.
The Rams are counting on a home-court advantage for their next matchup when Seattle University heads to Moby Arena on Saturday, Nov. 17.Colorado State will look to avenge a loss last season to the Redhawks (61-43) on the road. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m. MT.
