Water polo recap: Rams take third in Brown Invite

PROVIDENCE, R.I.—The Rams felt they let one slip away on Saturday, dropping an overtime contest to the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps water polo team. On Sunday they got revenge, defeating the Athenas, 16-9, to take third place in the Brown Invite.
“It was a good way to end the tournament,” associate head coach Mike Moody said. “Both losses on the weekend were close, so we could have finished even better, but I’m proud of the way we played today.”
Game 3: Colorado State 5, Wagner 9
Sunday morning against Wagner (3-1), in the final game of pool play, CSU (2-6) was within 4 minutes of defeating the Seahawks and advancing to the championship game. Despite leading 4-1 after the first period and 5-4 entering the fourth, Wagner outscored CSU 5-0 in the final frame to win the contest.
“We got into foul trouble and late offensive turnovers hurt us,” Moody said. “Bad passes led to quick scores, and we lost the lead in the end.”
Stephanie Weed led the Rams with two goals. Senior Melissa Fisher had 14 stops in the cage, tied for the 10th-most in CSU single-game history.
Game 4: Colorado State 16, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 9
After pool play, Wagner came out as the top seed, going 3-0, while the three other teams each went 1-1.
CSU was then pitted against CMS (1-6), in the third-place game.
The Rams took a commanding 7-0 lead and never trailed, defeating CMS, 16-9.
“It felt great to redeem yesterday’s loss,” Moody said.
Freshman Ariel Arcidiacono scored six goals, tied for the most in CSU history. Sophomore Kelcy Barott scored four times, and three other players scored twice.
As a team, the 16 goals was the highest offensive output since May 1, 2011, a 16-6 victory over Sonoma State.
Junior Michelle Slagle had 13 saves for the Rams. No. 20 Brown, the tournament host, defeated Wagner Sunday afternoon to win the tournament.
CSU will host its first home game on Feb. 23, an exhibition contest against the top players from the University of Colorado and University of Denver club teams. In last year’s inaugural contest against the Colorado Club All-Stars, CSU won 18-2.
