AUSTIN, Texas - After an over six-hour weather delay, Colorado State resumed action in full force at the NCAA West Preliminary at Myers Stadium Friday.
Ashley Reid qualified for the championship round in the high jump, and Jessica Sharbono will join her in the discus.
Reid tied her season best, clearing a height of 5 feet, 8.75 inches, placing fifth overall. She leaped to finish 28 spots better than her 33 seed. Jazmyn Webster also improved 20 marks from her seed, clearing 5-7. She placed 22nd.
Sharbono and Jenna Sliwinski were in the middle of competition in the second flight of the women's discus when the first lightning strike occurred. Sharbono threw the furthest distance for the Rams at 174 feet, 1 inch in the first of her six attempts. She placed eighth overall. Sliwinski fouled on each of her throws.
Kiah Hicks and Liz Johnson were each in the third flight of the discus. Hicks reached 162-7 on her third attempt, placing 17th overall, and Johnson took 25th with a throw of 157-0.
Trevor Brown turned in another impressive sub-14 second race in the 110-meter hurdles at 13.94. He took second place in his heat and seventh overall. Brown will run again Saturday in the quarterfinal at 6:20 p.m. MT.
Sprints coach Karim Abdel Wahab was pleased with Brown's performance.
"Trevor did a great job staying focused and composed regardless of the three-hour rain delay and the wind conditions," said Abdel Wahab. "We are excited about tomorrow."
Kaitlin Hanenburg broke her personal record in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at 10:28.51. She finished 12th in her heat and 28th overall. Her time ranks fourth-best in the CSU records books.
Andrew Goodman closed out the evening in the men's steeplechase at 12:30 a.m. CT. He clocked a time of 8:57.43, placing eighth in his heat and 25th overall.
In the men's shot put, freshman Tyler Schultz took 20th with a throw of 55-11.75. Ken Harriman tied for 30th with a distance of 54-6.
The track events, which were slated to start at 4 p.m. MT, were delayed three hours. The field events were halted at 12:45 p.m. and did not resume until 7:30 p.m. Due to the inclement weather, the men's hammer was postponed to Saturday. Harriman will throw at 9 a.m. He'll be joined by Reid (triple jump), Hicks (shot put) and Brown (110 hurdles).
