Head Coach Tom Hilbert
(on overview of the match)
“This Fresno team is very young and their head coach is not traveling. They’re out of sorts, they hit a lot of unforced errors, and a lot of that was because we blocked exceptionally well today. We didn’t just block, we stuffed balls and that intimidates people and causes them to do things they don’t want to do. Also, we continued to play clean and with great maturity, even with some of our bench people in there. Dri (Culbert) played great and really asserted herself as an attacker. We had some things that weren’t great, but overall we played a fantastic match against a team that’s young. They’re going to get better.”
(on CSU’s performance in the second set)
“The second set was pretty rare. It was a 100 percent sideout set. They didn’t score any serving points. I’m not saying that to be negative towards Fresno State; I’m saying that because we played very well. That game only went seven rotations. They did hit a lot of unforced errors, but we did play very cleanly. I’m proud of our team for getting through this, doing it right, doing it with class and now we move on.”
(on the team's continued success)
“I think the key is that we’re getting balanced and we prepare well. This team plays the defense and transition part of the game as well as anyone else. What I mean by that is their ability from dig to kill is very good. The hitters are all well trained and they understand how to play with discretion as an attacker. Marlee (Reynolds) with her first six swings didn’t have a kill and then she got four in a row. She ends up hitting .400, but she didn’t make any mistakes. She knows how to not hurt us, and that’s the kind of maturity this team has.”
(on Fresno State’s errors)
“The unfortunate part of that is that you don’t have to score as many. You would think that’s a good thing, but really when you compare any of these sets to the third set at Wyoming where it took us 20 kills to win that set, it’s better for our team to play that set. I don’t want to say that this is not valuable; it always is, and it’s great to play at home, and we had a great crowd. Every match takes on a different character, and this one was about us trying to play cleanly and not make a lot of mistakes. As a result they couldn’t stay in the game with us.”
(on CSU’s upcoming match against New Mexico)
“New Mexico is very good. They did lose at San Diego State in five, but they have one of, if not, the most dynamic players in the league – Chantale Riddle. They’re solid in a lot of places, they’re well coached, competitive and they’re gunning for us. Their gym is a hard place to play. Next Thursday’s match is huge for us. We need to have a great week of practice and really go into that with the right attitude.”
Junior opposite hitter Adrianna Culbert
(on CSU’s effective offensive game)
“Part of it is knowing that even though they are a really young team anyone can play their best at any point. We went in knowing what we can do on our side and trying to run our offense the way we run it instead of getting stuck on how they play. That was a key part of it tonight. We just focused on our side of the court instead of theirs.”
Junior libero Jaime Colaizzi
(on the Rams’ defense and blocking)
“We stayed really dialed in and aware of everything that was coming at us. That’s huge, and blocking was also huge. We didn’t have to work as hard on defense because the blocking was great. It’s just all of us being dialed in and aware of what’s coming at you.”
(on being a target)
“This has been tradition; we just have a big target on our backs in conference play. We take pride in that, and I think it fuels our fire a little bit.”
Junior setter Crystal Young
(on getting playing time)
“Me knowing my part as a player on this team, I realize that Deedra Foss is a four-year setter. I respect her as a player and I respect her as a person. I came here knowing that she would be in front of me. That is me as a person taking on that role. When I do get playing time, it’s great. It’s good experience for me, especially for next year when she’s gone. I’m going to need that, so when I get it I take it, but if not I just play my role.”
