FRESNO, Calif. – The Colorado State Rams (4-12-0, 2-6-0 MW) dropped their third consecutive match on Sunday afternoon, this time on the road at the feet of the Fresno State Bulldogs (4-13-0, 3-5-0 MW). After jumping out to a 2-0 lead, the Rams surrendered four-consecutive goals, including three in the second half, to lose 4-2.

The match started as well as it could have for Colorado State, with the Rams in control of every aspect. Colorado State was rewarded for its dominant in the 26th minute on its third corner kick of the match. Junior defender Jessica Stauffer launched a ball to the back post which senior defender Catherine Ruder corralled. Ruder flicked the ball back into the middle which junior defender Megan Speed appeared to get a head on, sending the ball into the back of the net for a 1-0 lead. The goal was officially credited as a Fresno State own goal, but it was Speed’s challenge on the header which created the opportunity.

Just three minutes later, the Rams struck again. Sophomore midfielder Amy Eckert found herself in possession of the ball at midfield and delivered a beautiful through ball down the right side to freshman forward Maddi Rodriguez. Rodriguez took two touches of the ball before beating the keeper to the near post for a 2-0 lead.

The Rams had no time to enjoy their second goal however, as the Bulldogs responded nearly immediately in the 31st minute. From the top of the box about 30 yards out, Ashari Hines blasted a shot into the upper corner of the goal, leaving redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Jesse McGinley helpless.

The two teams went into the break with the Rams holding a 2-1 advantage, which it would hold on to until late in the second half. Fresno State’s persistent attack found an equalizer in the 73rd minute, again from the foot of Hines from the edge of the box.

Hines added to her career-performance with a hat trick in the 82nd minute to pull the Bulldogs ahead at 3-2. Despite giving up the go-ahead goal, the Rams remained strong in their efforts to find a goal of their own. That moment appeared to happen in the 85th minute when Stauffer served up a dangerous free kick that bounced in the box and was seemingly fumbled by the Fresno State goalkeeper before being kicked in by a Colorado State. However the goal was waved off for obstruction and the score remained 3-2 in Fresno State’s favor.

Fresno State added a fourth goal down the stretch in the 88th minute to complete their 4-2 comeback win. Colorado State will stay on the road for the third-consecutive time to take on the New Mexico Lobos in Albuquerque next Friday.  Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. MT and will be streamed on the Mountain West Network.

Additional Notes

  • In the 21st minute, Colorado State senior defender Jami Vaughn crossed the 3,000 minute threshold for consecutive minutes played without a sub. Vaughn has now played in 34 consecutive matches and a total of 3,069 minutes without missing any action.
