ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Colorado State (4-13-0, 2-7-0 MW) came up empty on its quest to pick up its first win away from home this year at New Mexico (7-5-2, 5-2-2 MW), falling 1-0 to the Lobos.
“I really feel for our kids,” Head Coach Bill Hempen said. “They played hard and the other team earned the victory, what can I say? We played pretty good stretches of soccer for as long as we have all year; it’s those moments that we panic and question ourselves that we end up getting a little frazzled.”
As both teams looked to get into a groove early on in the match, splitting possession, the Rams picked up their best opportunity of the match midway through the first half. In the 19th minute, Colorado State attacked down the left side and earned a Jessica Stauffer corner kick. Stauffer’s corner kick found Speed on the back post, whose angled header bounced in front of the goal before hitting off the crossbar and staying out.
The two sides remained deadlocked throughout the first 45 minutes as neither side was able to produce a better opportunity than the one that Speed had.
In the second half, New Mexico took advantage of a rare clean opportunity. After possessing the ball in CSU territory, Alexis Leyba set up Maddie Irwin for her first goal of the season in the 46th minute. Irwin took one dribble before blasting a shot from 25 yards that found the back of the net.
“It was a great shot,” Hempen said. “I think defensively we could have maybe pressured it a bit more and we didn’t, but it was a great shot.”
Immediately following the goal, the Lobos continued to mount the pressure on the Rams, but CSU’s defense stayed strong and composed. Despite controlling possession, New Mexico couldn’t break free from Colorado State’s defenders to find a second goal to give itself a cushion in the match.
The Rams, however, couldn’t take advantage of an impressive defensive performance and find the equalizer. Colorado State had two shots in the second half, but neither were on target. Despite the result, Hempen walked away incredibly pleased with his team’s effort and execution.
“There was so much good that came from the game, so it’s hard to be down,” Hempen said. “You want to pull together and be better at the end of the season than you were at the beginning of it, and I think we are.”
Colorado State returns home for its final home match of the year against conference-leading San Diego State. CSU’s three seniors, Catherine Ruder, Maggie Sherman and Jami Vaughn will each be honored for Senior Day as CSU’s first senior class in program history. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m. MT and will be streamed for free on the Mountain West Network.
