Head Coach Tom Hilbert
(on what he saw from his team)
“We were defending and serving well. We missed more serves than they did. They hadn’t missed one in the first two sets, they missed two serving, finally, in the last set. We were serving tougher, being more aggressive and creating some opportunities. We out-dug them and converted them into kills. If you look at how many more digs we have than kills it ends up that we’re winning this game because we’re defending it and converting it into kills. It’s good stuff.”
(on individual performances)
“I felt like they did a nice job on (Kelsey) Snider. I thought Jasmine (Hanna) struggled sometimes, but I thought Marlee (Reynolds) was outstanding the entire night. Dri (Adrianna Culbert) was outstanding. We spun around to Row 5 so Marlee could get more swings in the third set and it worked.”
(on winning Set 2 after trailing by five)
“This was another competitive test for my team. To battle through that second set and win, that was really good. This team has been winning close sets, and I’m proud of them. I’m proud of them as people and who they are. They’re competitors, and it’s really neat to see.”
(on having a conversation with Deedra Foss on the sideline during the first set)
“That conversation was about what they were doing to (Kelsey) Snider. If they double Snider and Deedra doesn’t feel that the outside hitters can terminate, then that’s what she does. She goes to Dri (Culbert). They were all over Kelsey, and they have good enough athletes to stop her, so at the end we were just putting her up high in front and just saying, ‘Get higher than them.’ That strategy is just our girl can touch higher than your girl. You don’t have to hit it hard, you just have to get up there and hit it high.
But, Snider is not the story here. Marlee is, and so is Dri. These guys were really good for us. This has been an interesting season. We were really tired after that first third of the year, and we’re just starting to get our legs back. We’re starting to see these guys play really nice and physical, and it’s really good.”
(on what the team was focused on coming into the match)
“The three players we wanted to stop were (Maddy) O’Donnell, (Sierra) Nobley and (Kaitlyn) Oliver. We did a pretty good job on the two youngsters, but O’Donnell played well. I like when that setter (Sarah Baugh) sets her. O’Donnell is available and in a really fast transition situation she gets to the ball a lot. We practiced for two days stopping middle attacks, and I thought we did an OK job with it; good enough to win. If you want me to say something I didn’t like today, I think we got used off the outside of our block too much. Nobley had four kills in a row with tips. We’re better than that defensively. That kid is a really good player for a freshman, though; I’m impressed.
Senior outside hitter Marlee Reynolds
(on her fourth-straight match with double digits for kills)
“Compared to the beginning of the season, I am definitely seeing the court better. I’m a little more comfortable with hitting different shots. Like Tom said, our legs are feeling a lot fresher, so I’m feeling really springy and I’m able to get up and hit over the blocker and hit it high off their hands. That’s helped out a lot.”
(on pulling through in close sets)
“I think we have the mentality, ‘We’re not going to lose.’” We are pretty competitive. Even in practice, with each other, we’re all super competitive, and that carries over into those type of sets.”
(on playing at home)
“It’s awesome. In those tight sets, like in Set 2, when you hear everyone cheering, you’re like, ‘Alright, we can do this.’ They’re behind us 110 percent. It makes it fun to put on a show for them.”
Junior opposite hitter Adrianna Culbert
(on being successful with back-row attacks)
“The first couple times they didn’t block me at all from the back row. As the match went on they started to get three blockers up, which helped because it’s just another thing the blockers have to deal with.”
(on pulling through in close sets)
“We’ve been in that close situation so many times that it’s just second nature to us. We’re just like, ‘OK, we want to be 20-20? That’s fine. We’ll still win in the end.’”
(on serving well)
“I think it helps a lot because it keeps them out of system. We don’t have to worry about the spread of their offense as much, so it makes it easier on the block, which is really nice. It’s easy for our defense if our block is set up, to go play around them. If they can only go to the outside it’s easy to read.”
