HEAD COACH Ryun Williams

(opening statement)

“Nice win, we got done what we needed to get done. Anxious to see how we were going to respond after the BYU game. We had some kids battling the flu and didn’t practice yesterday. Short bench and I thought our kids handled this game with great maturity. We hadn’t play three possessions of zone all year we thought that was you know we didn’t want to get to wild and crazy defensively and drain some of our kids. We’ve got three games in six days here this week. I thought we were pretty disruptive with that, it was nice to see our kids execute that.”

(on Gritt Ryder not practicing)

“I need to get her in practice so I can yell at her again. I mean I haven’t yelled at Gritt (Ryder) in three weeks. She is playing like a senior, she knows what is going on, she is trying to keep those legs fresh, she is trying to keep that foot calmed down a little bit so she doesn’t practice as much. She is a veteran. She plays like it. She had a good performance tonight.”

(on Ryder staying in shape)

“She gets her fitness in the game, we have to find a way to get her some rest, playing the zone does that a little bit so she is not running around off of screens but Gritt’s in pretty good shape right now. She played 90 minutes in the Thanksgiving tournament, she played 40 minutes at Drake, she played 40 minutes against BYU. We gave her a break tonight, how much did she play tonight? 36, yeah we gave her 4 minutes off tonight.”

(on Emilie Hesseldal’s injury)

“Emilie (Hesseldal) had a dislocated elbow in the BYU game I think everybody could see that on the TV. So we are still waiting to see the doctor tomorrow to see what the x-rays show but I think we will have her back sooner rather than later. She was playing pretty good too, rebounding well, kind of our anchor defensively. She was scoring it pretty solidly so we surely miss her.”

(on Alana Arias getting playing time)

“She got so tired, she hasn’t ran up and down the floor 20 times in the last month and a half I guarantee it. She ran up and down three times and she was looking at us with her eyes so big looking like, “I’m going to try coach.” But you can see that she has some skill on the block, we have to learn to play around that, adjust our emotion a little bit to kid that just eats up that lane. She did a good job picking her kills tonight. I think as the game went on you just saw Alana become more and more comfortable. She got a little excited early on when she got those touches. But we are going to need her, she is 6-4 and she did a nice job making them score over her so it was neat to see her play tonight.”

(on Arias for the rest of the season)

“It’s extremely valuable, we really don’t have a back to the basket player, we had that in Sam (Martin) last year that could get some baskets down there and Alana can do that, someone to throw it to and play inside out with instead of playing through the outside all the time.”

(on having 22 assists)

“If we would have made any baskets in the first 5 minutes we would’ve had 28 assists. Our turnover numbers are exceptional, what are we, third in the country or something like that. So we don’t turn it over, we are a streaky shooting team. We got the same shots against BYU as we did tonight but we surely like to see those assists numbers where it is at. Gritt was one shy of a double-double; Victoria Wells had six assists I thought she played really well within herself. So those are always good numbers. It was a good win, really good win. It was neat to go against Payton Humple from Fort Collins, that is a big time family here in Fort Collins and it doesn’t get any better than the uncle family. I’m proud of Hump, she is going to be a good player for Mines. I’m sure she was excited to be at Moby tonight, she did a great job tonight.”

Gritt Ryder

(on injury and minutes played)

“It’s doing really well. It’s fun to play so I don’t mind it. I have to adjust it a little bit, but it was a nice little break at the end.”

(on all around stats)

“I think we played good as a team. My teammates got me open and that’s why I hit a lot of threes. Then they made the shots I passed to them. It was really good offense today.”

(on being back in Moby)

“I think it was good for everyone to get their confidence back. It was a tough loss at BYU. It was fun to come in here and for all of us to play well. It was fun to get the win.”

(on 22 team assists)

“I think that was really important. As I said before, a lot of people hit their shots. (Keyora Wharry) and (Victoria Wells) had a lot of assists. Everyone just got going and it felt good to be back in Moby and start hitting tour shots again.”

Keyora Wharry

(on 2-3 zone)

“That’s what he said the plan was, just getting used to something different. From what I heard it’s something they used last year a lot and it was pretty effective. I’m assuming we’re going to use that a lot more and it will be more effective.”
