FORT COLLINS, Colo. - After a delay and relocation indoors due to inclement weather, Day 2 of the Colorado State Invitational resumed Sunday afternoon at the Fort Collins Country Club. CSU held one round of doubles matches followed by a round of singles against Northern Colorado; Wyoming was unable to participate due to the weather.
CSU's Aina Hernandez Soler and Madison Porter, both seniors, defeated UNC's Marissa Baca and Anna Battersby, 6-4, giving the Rams a doubles victory. Juniors Caroline Henderson and Celine Voss (7-5) and seniors Laia Hernandez Soler and Maddie Buxton (6-1) also competed against UNC in doubles, but were unable to come away with victories.
"We had control over matches and were unable to sustain it," CSU head coach Jon Messick said "We lost sets in singles matches where we let the momentum change and we were unable to overcome it."
CSU was competitive in singles play, but was unable to come away with a victory. Freshman Emily Kolbow was defeated in close straight sets (6-4, 6-4), and Buxton lost in three sets (1-6, 6-2, 6-0). Porter also forced three sets, but was unable to clinch the victory after winning the opening set (2-6, 6-3, 6-1). Laia Hernandez Soler retired early from her singles match after suffering an injury.
CSU now has a little time off before returning to action for the ITA Mountain Regionals, which starts Oct. 15 in Las Vegas, Nev.
