RAMS FINISH 7th IN HOME TOURNAMENT
CSU opened the 2015-16 season with a seventh-place finish in its home tournament, the Colonel Wollenberg Ptarmigan Ram Classic, Sept. 14-15. Several positives were taken from the tournament, including three top-20 finishes, but head coach Annie Young and her team felt like the Rams could have done even better. Entering the final round, CSU was tied for second (+2), and
CSU’s Elisabeth Rau was just one stroke off the lead (-2). Out of 90 competitors from 17 different teams, CSU’s Sarah Archuleta finished tied for eighth (+4), her first-ever top-10 finish. Teammates Rau and Mikayla Tatman – who was competing as an individual – tied for 15th (222, +6).
RETURNING RAMS
CSU returns one of its most-experienced lineups, bringing back five of its six competitors from last season. Freshman Allie Andersen and sophomore Elisabeth Rau competed in all 10 tournaments for the Rams, with Andersen holding a team-best stroke average of 74.8. She had two top-10 finishes, while Rau had one. Freshman Sarah Archuleta had a team-best round of 69 at the Juli Inkster Spartan Invitational. Junior Riley Leming competed in five tournaments for CSU, while Mikayla Tatman participated in seven.
In addition to the five returners, the Rams signed a pair of prep golfers – Antonia Frisia (Turin, Italy) and Katrina Prendergast (Sparks, Nev.), and added Hawai’i transfer Brianna Becker.
SUCCESS IN THE CLASSROOM
Five of CSU’s six golfers from 2014-15 earned Mountain West Academic All-Conference honors for holding a cumulative grade-point average above 3.0. Of the five, Andersen, Archuleta, Rau and Tatman return this fall. Additionally, Tatman was named an All-American Scholar by the Women’s Golf Coaches Association. The national honor is Tatman’s second (also in 2013), and dating back to 2004, at least one Rams golfer has been a recipient. In the classroom, Tatman is pursuing a degree in human development and family studies and holds a 3.73 GPA.
2014-15 HIGHLIGHTS
- Finished sixth at the 2014-15 Mountain West Championship, a 13-stroke improvement from the prior year.
- Freshman Allie Andersen had the Rams’ top performance (222), finishing in a tie for eighth place, the Rams’ highest since 2012.
- Andersen and sophomore Elisabeth Rau earned Mountain West Golfer of the Week honors, CSU’s first multiple-recipient season since joining the MW in 1999-2000.
LABARBERA JOINS YOUNG’S STAFF
Former Rams standout Jessa LaBarbera wrapped up her playing career this spring, but she didn’t have to wait long – or go far – for her next golf opportunity. CSU Head Coach Annie Young announced the addition of LaBarbera in July, joining Young’s staff as assistant coach.
LaBarbera, a native of Allen, Texas, began her collegiate career at CSU in 2011. In total, she competed in 32 tournaments, including 21 of 22 over her final two seasons. In 2014-15, she tied a career best with a score of 72 in the Silverado Showdown, and at the Gold Rush Invitational, carded a career-best 16th place (228).
NEXT ON THE TEE
CSU will return to action next week in Sammamish, Wash., for the Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational, beginning Tuesday.
