LITTLETON, Colo. - Colorado State sophomore golfer Katrina Prendergast leads the Ron Moore Women's Intercollegiate after one round of play, shooting a 4-under 68 on Friday. As a team, the Rams are in third place out of 18 teams, shooting a season-best 4-over 292.

"It's good for them to see themselves near the top and in contention," head coach Annie Young said. "They've been working extremely hard the last few weeks. The more we play the better we're going to get. We didn't make the big mistakes that we've been making the past few tournaments, and that was the difference today."

Prendergast's 68 is one ahead of Audrey Judd (Nebraska) and Sophie Newlove (Denver) and two strokes ahead of seven players tied with a 2-under 70. CSU freshman Ellen Secor is in line for her third consecutive top-20 finish to begin her collegiate career, currently tied for 13th place with an even-par-72.

"She played solid and has been working really hard," Young said of Prendergast. "It was fun to see her out there enjoying the game."

Prendergast had five birdies - one off the lead - and just one bogey, shooting 2-under on both the front and back nine. Overall, CSU had nine birdies and a tournament-most 63 pars.

Senior Brianna Becker had her second-best round of golf of the season (2-over 74), and sits one stroke behind a tie for 20th place.

Competing as individuals, sophomore Caroline Reiners carded a 4-over 76 (season best), while freshman Jessica Sloot was at 6-over (78). Sarah Archuleta also was at 6-over, while Elisabeth Rau is at 10-over (82). In total, there are 102 competitors in the field.

With five golfers each at 2-under, Pepperdine leads the field with an 8-under 280. Host Denver - last year's champion - is in second (1-over 289), followed by CSU. Nebraska and Georgetown are one stroke behind the Rams (5-over 293), followed by Kentucky (6-over 294), Delaware (7-over 295), Long Beach State and Ole Miss (8-over 296), Wyoming (9-over 297), Fresno State (11-over 299), South Dakota (14-over 302), UC Riverside and San Francisco (15-over 303), Arkansas Little Rock and Nevada (17-over 305), Northern Colorado (20-over 308) and North Dakota State (25-over 313).

Round 2 begins Saturday, with the final round being played Sunday. Live scoring can be tracked through BirdieFire.

"I think it's important to realize that tomorrow is a new day," Young said. "A lot of times when you have a good round you expect it's going to be just as easy the next round, but tomorrow is a fresh new day and we've got to do whatever we need to do in order to keep improving."
