CSU competing in second dual meet of 2017-18 season in Laramie on Thursday
FORT COLLINS, Colo. -- The Colorado State Rams swimming & diving squad will head to Laramie, Wyo., to compete against the Wyoming Cowgirls on Thursday at 5 p.m. MT. Wyoming is hosting the meet at Laramie High School's pool.
The rivalry matchup is CSU's second dual meet of the 2017-18 season. The Rams hosted Denver at Moby Pool on Saturday.
CSU has not defeated Wyoming in a dual meet since 2008, but feels confident in what his team will bring to the pool on Thursday.
"They've certainly had our number for the past several years," Woodard said. "I don't think our team is intimidated by that. I think they're looking more at how they can make an impact and how to beat them. They're looking at the logistics of what a win would look like. Their heads are in the right place."
This event will be CSU's second of the season against a Mountain West competitor. The Rams outpaced Air Force in the season-opening, four-team Intermountain Shootout Oct. 6-7. However, Woodard says it's challenging to use these early MW matchups as a barometer for the conference meet in February.
"I've seen some teams that swim lights out in the fall and then they can't bring it to conference, and I've seen it the other way where a team starts off slow and then really turns it on in the spring," Woodard said. "I look more at the mental side of the battles this early. Are we winning those mental battles? Are we doing the right things in the last 25 yards of a race to get the best result? Are we not afraid to add something new to our dive list? That's what we assess ourselves on."
Several Rams have had standout performances over the team's first two competitions. Sophomore Marie Goodwyn has five wins over the first two meets, winning in IM and Butterfly disciplines. Senior Rowan Hauber has four wins, while freshman Maddie Ward has three. Ward's time in the 200 Breaststroke (2:19.61) ranks first in the MW, while holds the league's top mark in the 200 Fly (2:03.08).
Woodard mentioned that the team's chemistry has been one of its strongest attributes early in the season.
"That's something that has become a hallmark for us. and I believe it's a hallmark of truly great teams," Woodard said. "We've had some great athletes in the past and some good teams. The cohesion of this team has really improved over the past few years, and I think that's why we are seeing better results."Â
