Brady tallies 18 points and 17 rebounds for third double-double as a Ram
FORT COLLINS, Colo. – Led by Annie Brady's second straight outing with a double-double, the Colorado State women's basketball team defeated the Morgan State Lady Bears, 60-44, in a near wire-to-wire victory on Thursday afternoon from Moby Arena.
Brady was 9-for-13 (.692) from the floor and tallied her third double-double of the season on 18 points and 17 rebounds. Stine Austgulen scored 14 points on 4-for-6 three-point shooting and 5-for-8 shooting from the floor overall. Grace Colaivalu rounded out CSU's top performers with a 10-point, seven-assist outing.
Colorado State (8-3) opened the game on an 8-0 run and held that lead for the entirety of the first half and much of the third quarter. Morgan State (6-6) was able to take the lead briefly in the third quarter, as the Lady Bears closed the first half on a 5-0 run and extended that run to 12-0 in the first three minutes of the third quarter for a brief 23-22 edge.
From that 23-22 deficit, Brady responded with a jumper just 22 seconds later and Austgulen sunk back-to-back threes to put the Rams back up by seven. CSU led by eight heading to the fourth quarter, but quick baskets to start the quarter by Austgulen and Colaivalu put the Rams up by double digits, an advantage they would hold on to for good.
One of CSU's largest advantages for the game was in field goal shooting, as the Rams outshot the Lady Bears, 46.9 percent (23-for-49) to 27.4 percent. The gap was especially large in the fourth quarter, where the Rams used a 53.8 percent (7-for-13) to 22.2 percent (4-for-18) shooting advantage to pull away from the Lady Bears.
IN THEIR WORDS
Colorado State head coach Ryun Williams
"This is a good win. Morgan State is a good basketball team. Defensively, we were really solid all night. I think we concentrated on that end of the floor and rebounded really well. Sometimes going in to break these can be difficult games. you sometimes wonder where your mind is going to be. Our approach today was very mature. Mostly because of these two 'oldies' right here (Annie Brady and Stine Austgulen). I'm really happy with this win."
On the team's consistency:
"We just want to be more consistent with (our play). When we defend, rebound and everybody performs their role offensively and is aggressive...I think we have a really good basketball team. We go through stretches where we build a lead and get a little careless with the ball and create six straight points for them. We had that in the second quarter, and we had that in the third or fourth quarter. That's what we need to get rid of. If we can just put a consistent 40 minutes together...I like this squad. I like what we can put out on the floor."
Junior forward Annie Brady
On her mindset:
"Just the same as every other game. We saw them in film and just knew that we would have to be really aggressive and hold them off."
On going into conference play:
"It's just about getting comfortable and confident and to keep working hard and building on each game."
Senior guard Stine Austgulen
On keeping focus going into break and then conference play:
"It's a huge game building on the things we've worked on individually going into conference...we're all excited to go home, but we're all excited to play basketball."
NOTES
- In the three games she has started this season, Annie Brady has averaged 19 points per game (57 total).
- Brady's 17 rebounds marked a new best at CSU. Her previous high was 15 rebounds against Gonzaga.
- Grace Colaivalu has led the Rams in assists in each of the past six games and in seven overall this season.
