Kravec paces field with 3,115 points through four events; Marquez scores 3,608 points in pentathlon in CSU debut for 10th-best total in program history

GOLDEN, Colo. – Seniors Nick Kravec and Talia Marquez paced the Colorado State track & field team in multi-event competition on Thursday as the Rams got their 2017-18 indoor season started at the Mines Alumni Classic & Multi from Steinhauer Fieldhouse.

Marquez finished the pentathlon with 3,608 points to place third of 21 competitors on Thursday, while Gabby Smith tallied 3,571 points and placed fourth to start her second full year as a multi-event athlete. Marquez's total ranks 10th in program history, while Smith moves up to 12th on CSU's all-time indoor list in the pentathlon.

Among the top events for Marquez were the 60-meter hurdles (9.00) and the long jump (18-9.75/5.73m – 11th on CSU's all-time indoor list), where she earned respective second-place finishes. Smith placed second in the 800 meters (2:24.38), and finished third in the long jump and shot put. Notably, Amelia Harvey placed first in the pentathlon 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.95, the No. 19 time on CSU's all-time indoor list. Harvey placed seventh with 3,263 points in her first career pentathlon, while Olivia Pappas placed ninth with 3,112 points.

In heptathlon competition, Kravec paces the field through four events with 3,115 points. The native of Fort Collins, Colo., finished no lower than third in any event on Thursday, taking first in the high jump (6-8.75/2.05m), second place in each of the long jump (22-6.5/6.87m) and the shot put (42-0.5/12.81m) and third in the 60-meter hurdles (7.16). Kravec's high jump mark is a new indoor or outdoor best by nearly three inches, while his shot put mark was a three-inch improvement from his best indoor mark last season.

Three Rams also competed in the long jump, led by freshman Isa Bynum in fifth place (23-7.25/7.19m). Dalten Fox leapt 23-0 (7.01m) for eighth place, while Bradly Wright took 10th (22-1/6.73m).

IN THEIR WORDS
Colorado State head assistant coach Ryan Baily
"I thought everyone performed really well and everyone had the right attitudes and mindset. It's a good starting point for us, and gives us a good baseline for where we need to be and what we need to work on. I'm very proud of the way our pentathletes finished today and Nick (Kravec) is on pace. His first long jump was a monster but a little bit of a foul, and we may have gotten a little too conservative on the runway, but he made up for it in the high jump and in the shot put. He's in good shape. We're excited for tomorrow."

NOTES
- Amelia Harvey had never previously competed in the 60-meter hurdles, 800 meters, shot put or high jump at the collegiate level.
- Each of Isa Bynum, Talia Marquez and Bradly Wright made their debuts for CSU on Thursday.
