GILBERT, Ariz. – Colorado State opened its spring season on Saturday, dropping duel matches against BYU and Iowa in Gilbert, Ariz. The match play was a late addition to the spring schedule after a round of the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown in November was rained out.
CSU began the day with 18 holes against BYU. The Cougars were victorious over the Rams, 5-1, with freshman Ellen Secor earning CSU's lone point. She won her match, 2-and-1, while senior Elisabeth Rau battled back from an early deficit, once three down, to lose by one on the final hole.
In the afternoon, Iowa narrowly defeated CSU, 3.5-2.5. Rau (5-and-4) and freshman Jessica Sloot (5-and-4) both won their matches after 14 holes, while sophomore Katrina Prendergast tied her opponent, leaving the Rams a half-point short of evening up the score.
The spring tournament season will officially begin later this month when the Rams travel to Seal Beach, Calif., for The Gold Rush.
