COLLEGE STATION, Texas - The Colorado State Rams finished the final day of the 2017 Mountain West Swimming & Diving Championship, their top league result since 2009. CSU also saw three more individual school records broken on Saturday at the Texas A&M Natatorium.
In total, CSU swimmers set nine school records this week. Senior Jenna Beaury officially became the fastest breaststroker in school history, setting a new top time in the 200 breast with a 2:13.89 in the prelims on Saturday. Beaury had already beaten the all-time mark in the 100 breast yesterday.
Sophomore Haley Rowley again broke one of her own records, this time in the 1650 freestyle swim. She finished in 16:26.75, besting her previous record from this fall by almost 1.5 seconds.
Beaury's record-setting time was good for a fifth-place finish, while Rowley took third with hers.
Tonicia Thomas and Rowan Hauber again produced with their backstroke abilities, placing sixth and eighth respectively in the 200 back. Katie Kicklighter earned a top-10 finish in the 100 freestyle, placing ninth, and Marie Goodwyn starred in the 200 butterfly, earning 26 critical team points with a fourth-place result.
The fifth-place Rams had a fitting end to their MW Championship week, placing exactly fifth in the 400 free relay with a foursome of Carmen Mand, Kicklighter, Teagan Griffith and Hauber.
The record-obliterating week turned into the best CSU finish in the MW Championship under head coach Christopher Woodard's leadership. CSU climbed from seventh to sixth on Thursday, and then to the fifth spot on Friday. CSU maintained its position on Saturday, securing a finish in the top half of the conference.
IN THEIR WORDS…
"The arrow is pointing up for CSU. It's a testament to the senior class. They really helped instill a culture here and have been great leaders for us. The records broken, the NCAA 'B' cuts; it all just shows what we've accomplished and foreshadows what's to come for this program." - CSU head coach Christopher Woodard on what this week's result means for the program
"They were a happy and focused crew all year long, and now the results have come. They were smiling and laughing on the pool deck, but they were also focused and prepared. That's what our program will try to continue to be about, moving forward." - Woodard on the team's fun and focused approach
"The realization for her is that she achieved more than maybe even she thought she would. She put in the work, and now her name is going to be in the record books in numerous places. She definitely earned every bit of this." - Woodard on the efforts of Jenna Beaury, who is officially the fastest breaststroker in CSU history
