LUBBOCK, Texas - After hitting a rough patch midway through Round 2, Colorado State golfer Katrina Prendergast finished strong on Tuesday to card a 4-over 76. Two-thirds through play, Prendergast is at 6-over 146 and is near the upper-third of the NCAA Regionals field (T-36th).
Prendergast was tied for 15th place out of 96 golfers through Monday's opening round, scoring a 2-over 74. She then opened Tuesday's second round with two birdies in her first four holes to move to an even-par 88 through 22 holes. One of the birdies came on Hole 2 - a par 5 - marking the second consecutive day she has birdied that hole.
Prendergast, however, went through a rough patch in which she had three bogeys and a double bogey during a five-hole stretch to fall to 5-over on the day. The sophomore settled down, though, shooting par and burying a birdie on her final five holes of the day to close at 4-over 76.
The CSU sophomore is one of six individuals selected to the Lubbock Regional. They are competing against teams from Arizona State, BYU, Furman, Georgetown, Iowa State, Kent State, Murray State, Oklahoma, Oregon, Oregon State, Richmond, Sacred Heart, San Diego State, TCU, Texas, Texas Tech, UCLA and UNLV. From each of the four regional sites, the low six teams and the low three individuals not on those teams (for a total of 24 teams and 12 individuals) will advance to the NCAA Championship, May 19-24, in Sugar Grove, Ill.
Prendergast is competing at NCAA Regionals for the second consecutive season. A year ago, as a true freshman, she finished in the upper third of the field. Already the holder of several school records, Prendergast is a two-time All-Mountain West golfer whose current season stroke average is on pace to finish third in school history. She will close action on Wednesday with a third and final round. Action begins at 7 a.m. MT and live scoring can be followed through GolfStat.
