CSU improves to 6-3 in dual meets this season
FORT COLLINS, Colo. – The Colorado State Rams defeated Northern Arizona in a tightly contested dual meet, 123-120, at Moby Pool on Friday night.
The win pushes the Rams to 6-3 on the season and 4-0 this week, following a trifecta of wins against Mountain West opponents in San Diego on Monday.
The meet was tied 80-80 with four events remaining going into the 100 Backstroke, but the Rams rattled off three consecutive individual wins to gain a lead they would not surrender against the Lumberjacks.
Junior Tonicia Thomas got the win in the 100 Back, finishing in 55.69. Junior Haley Rowley then won the 500 Freestyle (5:00.23) and freshman Maddie Ward took first in the 100 Breaststroke (1:05.37).
The three wins were critical, as NAU would take the 400 Free Relay victory to close out the meet and narrow the margin to just 3 points.
"We were counting on them," head coach Christopher Woodard said about his star swimmers late in the meet. "We were in a position where we basically had to win all three of those, just in case we couldn't win in the final relay. They were clutch."
The Lumberjacks, who are the defending WAC champions, earned wins in both diving events and began the swim portion of the meet with a win in the 200 Medley Relay. Rowley got the Rams on track with her first win of the day in 1000 Free (10:18.41). CSU then took places 2-4 (Colleen Olson, Ida Donohue, Jade Federlin) in the 200 Free.
Sophomore Marie Goodwyn continued to produce for the Rams, picking up a pair of wins (200 IM, 100 Butterfly).
"We had some great swims from some top-flight kids and some gutsy swims from others that put us in position to win," Woodard explained.
The Rams will go to Greeley, Colo., tomorrow for a dual meet against Northern Colorado at 11 a.m. MT. The meet will give the Rams a glimpse of what it will feel like to compete multiple days in a row, like they will at the MW Championships next month.
"Hopefully that treat it as prep for conference," Woodard said of his team's approach for tomorrow. "Having to race on a Friday night and go right back at it on Saturday morning is exactly what we will have to do at conference. If they get their rest and warm-up well, then I expect a good performance from them."
