CSU finishes busy week with 5-0 record in dual meets

GREELEY, Colo. – The Colorado State Rams defeated Northern Colorado in Greeley, Colo., on Saturday, 145-98. CSU improved to 5-0 in dual meets for the week with the victory.

The meet began at 11 a.m. MT, just 16 hours after the Rams defeated Northern Arizona at Moby Pool on Friday night. CSU also beat San Diego State, Fresno State and New Mexico on Monday in San Diego.

CSU got off to a quick start on Saturday, winning the 400 medley relay in the first swim of the day. Junior Tonicia Thomas, freshman Maddie Ward, sophomore Marie Goodwyn and senior Rowan Hauber combined to finish in 3:54.19 for the win.

Junior Haley Rowley promptly added another win for the Rams, taking the 1000 Freestyle (19:19.84) in the next event. She later placed first in the 500 Free, winning by nearly five seconds (5:01.83).

Thomas (200 Backstroke, 2:02.35) and Ward (200 Breaststroke, 2:25.51) added individual wins for the Rams on yet another successful day in the pool.

"The team worked together well today," assistant coach Mackenzie Novell said. "We've been supporting each other and it helped us reach our goals. They have been learning how to prepare for their races better and execute their race strategies, and the results have been coming."

Freshman Skylar Williams was CSU's top finisher in the diving events, placing second in the 1-meter and third in the 3-meter.

The Rams have been using this week as a preview for what they'll face at the 2018 Mountain West Championships (Feb. 14-17 in San Antonio). CSU had to train, recover and compete like they will that week, and the team is proud of what they accomplished in its first competitions of the new year.

"As a coach I am happy to see them learning and growing throughout the season and becoming laser focused as we head towards conference next month," Novell said. "As we head into our final dual meet of the season against Air Force, we are eager for one more learning opportunity."

"Today was another good learning experience for us," diving coach Chelsea Popplewell added about her young group of divers. "We are learning how to perform on back-to-back days, which we will have to do at the conference meet. Meets like this are valuable for our group."

CSU will compete in its last dual meet of the season against Air Force at Moby Pool on Jan. 26 at 4 p.m. MT.
