Turnovers, rebounding sting Rams despite holding Buffs below 30 percent shooting from the floor
BOULDER, Colo. – The Colorado State women's basketball team fell to the Colorado Buffaloes, 59-40, on Wednesday night from the CU Events Center.
Â
Junior guard Mollie Mounsey led Colorado State (1-1) offensively with 14 points and added six rebounds. Sophomore guard Lore Devos tallied nine points and corralled a team-high eight boards. Sophomore guard Grace Colaivalu scored six points on 3-for-5 shooting and registered four steals. The Rams held Colorado's (2-0) high-tempo offense to 59 points and 29 percent shooting, despite conceding extra possessions on 21 turnovers and 31 CU rebounds on the offensive glass.
Â
Wednesday's opening quarter featured back-and-forth play, as the lead changed hands five times over the game's first 10 minutes. Colorado State took the lead back again at the 9:10 mark in the second quarter, but CU reclaimed it less than a minute later and never allowed the Rams to lead the rest of the way. CSU was the superior shooting team in the first half, outshooting the Buffs 43 to 31 percent; however, CU hauled in 14 offensive rebounds and turned over the Rams 16 times to take a 30-21 halftime lead.
Â
CSU's first-half shooting pace shrunk in the second half, as the Rams opened Wednesday's final 20 minutes with 0-for-11 shooting until Colaivalu converted on a layup at the 3:44 mark. The Rams closed the third quarter with makes on three of their final four field goal attempts, but the scoring drought had already put the Rams at a 45-30 disadvantage. A similar drought to start the fourth quarter allowed Colorado to extend its lead above 20 points within the first two minutes, an advantage it sustained until the final 59-40 result.
IN THEIR WORDS
Colorado State head coach Ryun Williams
On CSU's guard play on Wednesday:
"We talk about doing things on our terms – don't let them speed you up and you pass it when you're ready to pass it. The pressure really affected us and (our guards) had a tough night handling the basketball…they have to be our 'quarterbacks' out there."
Â
On how the Rams' defense affected the game:
"We shortened the game and there were a lot of long possessions because of the zone (that CSU played). It's amazing to me…we held them to 59 points and we gave up 31 offensive boards and 21 turnovers. If we can rebound better and value the ball better…our plan on defense was executed by our kids quite well. We just have to finish plays."
Â
NOTES
The Colorado State women's basketball team returns home to face the Northern Colorado Bears on Tuesday, Nov. 20. Tip time is scheduled for 7 p.m. MT from Moby Arena.
