Stamatelopoulos joins Rams with experience in SA Premier League
FORT COLLINS, Colo. – The Colorado State women's basketball team has signed Katia Stamatelopoulos to a national letter of intent, head coach Ryun Williams announced on Wednesday.
Â
Stamatelopoulos will have freshman eligibility for Colorado State beginning with the 2019-20 season. Among the notables for the point guard from Adelaide, South Australia native is multiple years of experience in the South Australia Premier League, the state's top level of club basketball.
Â
"Katia is a very competitive, intelligent and tough-minded point guard who can really lead a team and distribute the ball," Williams said. "She makes her teammates around her better, and with the shooters we will put on the floor next season, she will be an extremely important addition to our basketball team."
Â
Stamatelopoulos played for the SA Premier League's Forestville Eagles, and helped lead her club team to a U18 national junior championship in 2017. In addition, the 5-foot-8 guard was selected to the South Australia U20 Women's Team that competed in the Australian Championships in 2018.
Â
In 2018, Stamatelopoulos ranked fourth on Forestville in points (7.9/game), second in assists (2.9/game), fourth in rebounds (5.4/game) and third in field goal percentage (.438). Forestville won two-thirds of its matches during the regular season that year before advancing to the finals of the league's playoffs.
Â
In addition to the 2018 Australian Championships, Stamatelopoulos made appearances in various other state and national tournaments, including the Southern Cross Challenge and the East Coast Challenge.
Â
Stamatelopoulos is the second Australian to sign with Colorado State in as many years, along with current freshman guard/forward Taylor Mole.
