CSU to test itself against strong field over three-day event
FORT COLLINS, Colo. – The Colorado State swimming & diving squad is headed to Houston for the Phill Hansel Invite. The three-day, 12-team event begins Friday at Houston's Campus Recreation and Wellness Center Natatorium.
This is the fourth consecutive year that the Rams have competed in the Phil Hansel Invite. Each time, the event is a good measuring stick for where the team is at in terms of training and execution of race tactics.
"I think we started to show some progression in our dual meets this fall," CSU head coach Woody Woodard said. "The Phil Hansel Invite will be the natural extension of that. We will learn where we are at after 12 weeks of hard training. We've seen flashes, but we have to be able to put it all together and integrate our newcomers on a multi-day event. This three-day, six-session event should be a good barometer of what kind of championship team we have."
Woodard explained what he hopes to see from his team during its weekend in Houston.
"First and foremost, we want to see a lot of energy in the prelims – vocally and in the races. We want to see them supercharged and ready to go. If they have butterflies, that's good; it means it matters. If we are coming out of the morning sessions and we feel like we have a lot of energy, then that's a good sign."
The 12-team field includes three other Mountain West programs – Air Force, Nevada and New Mexico.
